Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she’s losing hope.

Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.

Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart. [goodreads]

Emotional. Unexpected. Poetic.

After the death of her father, Layken, her mother and her brother moved to Michigan to start all over again. Right at the beginning we’d get introduced to Laykens lovely new neighbor Will who happens to be our love interest. Though the lovestory is rushing surprisingly fast forward, it still felt right. Laykens own thoughts and her entire feelings are open to discover for us in such a natural way that it felt extremely intensiv while reading through her story. Maybe the reason for the naturalness of this love story is Will himself. He is so easygoing, lovely and caring that I badly wanted it to work out.

Death. The only thing inevitable in life.

And then something happened what I wasn’t expecting at all. I was stunned by the course the story was taking. I wasn’t prepared for this kind of twist and was absolutely fascinated by the idea of it. I suffered at least as much as Layken did. Colleen Hoover has such an intensive and emotional way of writing that you can’t get around feeling the same things her protagonists are. I felt outraged. Betrayed. Furious. It was perfect. This book brought up every single emotion in exact the right way. This story will make you bleed, die and live at the same time.

Life happens. Shit happens. And it happens a lot. To a lot of people.

By putting the poetry slams into the story every now and then Colleen Hoover hit one of my nerves. I love poetry slams. It was one of the main reasons I picked up this book in the first place. At the beginning I was afraid of those poems being rather boring. Lucky me I have been taught the opposite: They have been my highlights of this book.

So you keep your ocean,
I’ll take the lake.

Although the problems Layken had to handle seemed to be a little bit to much, in the end I considered it just being part of every life: You can’t choose how much you’d like to suffer and sometimes it happens to be a lot at the same time. And this is where Laykens life is heading.

Slammed is a beautiful moving story with an incredible deeply emotional love story. For fans of Nicholas Sparks a must-read! The protagonists showed a depth and authenticity I’ve got surprised with. A perfect lovestory about life, family and friendship.
