Review: A Court of Mist and Fury

The second book of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series followed close in my reading list 2017. I absolutely fell in love with this book. This book is one of the reasons why I feel in love with reading itself in the first place. After years I felt a crush I haven’t dared to hope for a book series since I got overwhelmed by the Harry Potter series as a teenager.

Feyre survived Amarantha’s clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can’t forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin’s people.

Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.

With more than a million copies sold of her beloved Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas’s masterful storytelling brings this second book in her seductive and action-packed series to new heights. [goodreads]

Reading Time

Oh, Cauldron…

This book series surpasses itself with every chapter, every new story, every character that comes along and invites us to live through this story. It’s magical. It’s different. It is the world of Feyre and I am fascinated by the way Sarah J. Maas knits and spindles this story. Every scene fits perfectly, every action makes sense. Everything makes sense. In this book we learn so much, experience unbelievable and get surprised. Behind each page awaits new dangers, stories and things that we’d never expected. It was so incredibly exciting that I couldn’t put down the book. I couldn’t. For months I haven’t read anything so exciting! I got torn into the story as though my life depended on it.

“To the people who look at the stars and wish, Rhys.“
Rhys clinked his glass against mine. “To the stars who listen— and the dreams that are answered.”
A Court of Mist and Fury | Sarah J. Maas

Feyres world of emotions has been described so accurately that at some point I thought I was her. Nothing is glossed over, nothing is undermined, all the beautiful and ugly facets of life are laid out here and brutally picked apart. Sarah J. Maas feels what her protagonists feel. She knows how to tell us their story in such a picturesque way that I was fascinated by the words and couldn’t believe how well she told me this story.

“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, Lucien, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
Feyre | A Court of Mist and Fury | Sarah J. Maas

I’ve been a fan of Rhysand already at the start of the first novel. But I wasn’t… I couldn’t have known what truly will happen. In no kind of way was I expecting what Sarah J. Maas was planing all along. After I finished A Court of Thorns and Roses I had a feeling that we will see Rhysand again. That we will find out a few secrets. But, oh holy Cauldron, I didn’t see that one coming. We learn so much more about this world, the characters who play the leading roles in it, the past of so many people and fates that it moved me in a way I wouldn’t have thought possible.

“I was not a pet, not a doll, not an animal.
I was a survivor, and I was strong.
I would not be weak, or helpless again
I would not, could not be broken. Tamed.”
Feyre | A Court of Mist and Fury | Sarah J. Maas

I love the way Sarah J. Maas structured the book. The chapters have the exact right length depending on the covered topic. I rushed through the pages, my reading speed adapted to the accompanying suspense. The writing style of Sarah J. Maas is more than admirable. Her words hit the right nerve. Every situation, feeling and change felt real and understandable.

“There are good days and hard days for me—even now. Don’t let the hard days win.”
A Court of Mist and Fury | Sarah J. Maas

The world building is impressive. Sarah J. Maas already made some hints in the first book about all the magic we could find in this new world, all the places, ideas and creatures. But in the first book it had just been stories. In this novel we get to visit all those legends and stories. Prythian is no longer a big secret to us; we walk among the courts, the lands and people who live and call those places home. It is dangerous, lethal and fascinating. And I loved every moment of it.

“I was his and he was mine, and we were the beginning and middle and end. We were a song that had been sung from the very first ember of light in the world.”
A Court of Mist and Fury | Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Mist and Fury exceeds all expectations I had after the first novel. It has been by far one of my reading highlights in 2017. I love everything about this book. I can’t even name one negative point.
